challenging, but not obviously challenging. As a result, the importance and urgency of working to develop belonging are often overlooked or ignored by an organization\u2019s leadership.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Belonging is the feeling of being valued, respected, and supported in the workplace. We\u2019ve\u00a0<\/span>written previously<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about the importance of belonging \u2013 about the psychology behind it and its significance in overall wellbeing. Employees who feel like they truly belong are more engaged, productive, and loyal.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The benefits are hard to argue against, but some leaders may seek to avoid the work of belonging because they think it\u2019s too hard, or that success is too difficult to measure. Leaders may also fall into the trap of thinking that because belonging is so obvious, it\u2019s not as important.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They may think that belonging is obvious in the same way that Tuesday is obvious. Most people know what day of the week it is; you don\u2019t need workplace initiatives to teach people that. But that\u2019s not how belonging works. It\u2019s a concept that may make perfect sense, but it involves any number of moving parts. It requires delicacy, intention, focus, and hard work.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But if you\u2019re honest with yourself, you already know that this is hard work worth doing. To get you started, here are five strategies that leaders should be taking in implementing belonging.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1. Be A Leader Who Leads<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is vitally important that leadership both champion and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">live<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0their organizational\u00a0values and show intention of creating this kind of culture. A business can have the best strategy in the world but if leadership isn\u2019t actively demonstrating support for it, it will go nowhere.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ideally, leaders need to not only set clear expectations, but also role model it on a daily basis. This is where leadership coaching\u00a0 can help in establishing confidence for managers at all levels.<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2. Foster Psychologically Safe Communication<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Open and honest communication is key to successful implementation of belonging. Leaders can encourage this by creating an atmosphere where people feel \u201csafe\u201d to have that open and honest communication \u2013 where they feel reasonably certain that their ideas will not be dismissed out of hand, nor that things are being \u2018hidden\u2019 from them by higher-ups.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You can develop this in a number of ways. It could be as simple as developing an agreed structure to meetings within the business, which help them to be safe spaces for people to perform at their best. A key to this comes in creating feedback channels that allow for honest feedback (ie, opportunities for employees to express concerns\/suggestions without fearing that doing so will negatively impact their standing in the organization).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3. Celebrate Achievements And Contributions At All Levels<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recognition is a powerful tool for fostering belonging. After all, an inherent part of belonging is the sense of being \u2018seen\u2019 and \u2018heard.\u2019 So, it\u2019s important to publicly recognize individual and team successes at company meetings, in newsletters, or through internal recognition programs. Special effort should be made to ensure that recognition isn\u2019t too heavily weighted; it may be easier for you to see what leaders and managers are doing but if other employees feel ignored they\u2019ll be less inclined to support those leaders and managers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Related to the above, don\u2019t limit your recognition to just meeting targets. Consider praising teamwork, mentorship, or \u2018going the extra mile.\u2019 Be sure to celebrate milestones like birthdays or work anniversaries; don\u2019t let someone\u2019s fifth or tenth anniversary at your organization go unnoticed!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">4. Remember That Belonging Is For Everyone<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When we say belonging is for everyone, we mean\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">everyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the past, efforts at belonging have focused too much on elevating specific groups. And the work of doing that has too often been placed squarely on the shoulders of those groups. As a result, the experience has sometimes been isolating rather than integrating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For belonging to work, you need\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">everyone<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0on board. You need\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">everyone<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to feel and believe that the organization\u2019s mission and goals are relevant and important to them.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Everyone<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0needs to feel heard. Which means that each member of an organization should be welcoming and feel welcomed. And the organization should do its best to consider the challenges to belonging that all employees face.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">5. Share Your Values<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At Talking Talent we\u2019re fond of the old phrase: \u201cTalk the talk\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0walk the walk.\u201d It\u2019s OK to emphasize the first part of that statement from time to time. In other words, if you\u2019re genuinely putting in the effort to build belonging, don\u2019t be afraid to let everyone know. Building an authentic brand of commitment to belonging will attract top talent that is like-minded and keen to play an active part.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One way to build such a brand is by sharing stories of your\u00a0 initiatives to create this kind of workplace culture (via employee stories, testimonials, case studies, etc), and by actively seeking employees who can and want to play a part in those initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is Just the Beginning<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The above five strategies are not the be-all-end-all of belonging. As stated above, it\u2019s a long and difficult \u2013 but ultimately worthwhile \u2013 process. Remember: the benefits of fostering a sense of belonging in the workplace are numerous and include: increased employee engagement; enhanced productivity and innovation; reduced absenteeism and
