We call the first person \u201cresilient\u201d and quietly wonder\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0wrong with the second. Then we book everyone onto a mindfulness course, send out a wellness newsletter, and consider the matter handled.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u00a0isn\u2019t, of course.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The problem\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0a lack of good intentions.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0that\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0been working from the wrong definition of resilience entirely \u2014 and in high\u2011performance\u00a0organisations, that misunderstanding is quietly costing us far more than we\u00a0realise.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Across sectors \u2014 whether\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0running a global pharmaceutical business, a professional services firm, a creative agency, or an energy company \u2014 the pressure to perform is\u00a0relentless\u00a0and the complexity keeps rising. Delivering results in that environment\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0just require sharp, skilled people. It requires people who feel connected, supported, and safe enough to perform at their best. And right now, in\u00a0organisations\u00a0of every kind, many\u00a0don\u2019t.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Myth of the Calm, Unruffled Professional<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:200,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ask most people what a resilient person looks\u00a0like\u00a0and\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0describe someone who never seems rattled. Unflappable under pressure. Serene where others panic.\u00a0Basically, a\u00a0human version of a screensaver \u2014 pleasant, stable, perpetually in soft focus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is, to use a technical term, completely wrong.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A nervous system that never shifts out of\u00a0neutral\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0regulated.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0flat. True regulation \u2014 the kind associated with high performance, creativity, and relational trust \u2014\u00a0looks nothing\u00a0like permanent calm. It looks like flexibility: the capacity to move into high\u2011energy states when the situation demands\u00a0it and\u00a0then return to baseline without getting stuck.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Think less\u00a0zen\u00a0master on a mountain, more elastic band that stretches and snaps back cleanly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Neuroscience has been making this point for years. The research on allostasis \u2014 the body\u2019s active process of achieving stability through change \u2014 tells us that a healthy system is one that moves, not one that stays still. Yet somehow, corporate wellness culture keeps selling us the beach. The ocean sounds. The deep breath before\u00a0the all\u2011hands meeting.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">None of that is bad.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0just incomplete.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0Getting Wrong About Dysregulation<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:200,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When we see someone\u00a0who\u2019s\u00a0anxious, withdrawn, snapping at colleagues, or staring blankly at their screen for the third hour running, we tend\u00a0sometimes\u00a0to diagnose one of two things: a personal resilience problem, or a bad attitude.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What we rarely consider is that what\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0observing\u00a0might be a highly intelligent system doing exactly what it was designed to do.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dysregulation \u2014 the state in which a person\u2019s autonomic nervous system is no longer flexibly responsive \u2014\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0brokenness.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0adaptation. If someone grew up in an unpredictable\u00a0environment or\u00a0has spent the last eighteen months in a psychologically unsafe team, their system has learned to stay on high alert because that worked.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some researchers prefer the term\u00a0sensitisation\u00a0for precisely this reason. The system\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0malfunctioning.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0predicting\u00a0from experience. Doing its job \u2014 just in the wrong context.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This matters enormously in\u00a0organisational\u00a0settings. But moving beyond the binary of fine\/not fine can fundamentally change how leaders interpret what\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0seeing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">You\u00a0Can\u2019t\u00a0Think Your Way Out of a Body State<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:200,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the most persistent myths in professional culture is that stress is primarily a cognitive problem with a cognitive solution.\u00a0That if\u00a0you\u00a0reframe\u00a0the situation,\u00a0practise\u00a0gratitude, or attend the right seminar, the nervous system will fall into line.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u00a0won\u2019t.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dysregulation is physiological: heart rate variability, cortisol rhythms, immune function.\u00a0You cannot think your way out of a state your body is in.\u00a0Reframing thoughts\u00a0matters \u2014 but it operates downstream of physiology.\u00a0The body needs to feel safe before the mind can think clearly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0philosophy.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0neurobiology.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Which also explains why chronic stress often presents as symptoms standard medical tests struggle to capture \u2014 fatigue, migraines, digestive issues, the\u00a0generalised\u00a0sense of being not\u2011quite\u2011right\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0dismissed when the bloods come back normal.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A growing body of research links prolonged autonomic dysregulation to inflammation, immune suppression, and reduced cognitive performance \u2014 effects that occupational health checks are rarely designed to detect.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The research on heart rate variability (HRV) is particularly compelling. Higher HRV correlates with emotional regulation, flexible thinking, and faster recovery. Stress hormones decrease. Not because anyone\u00a0is\u00a0consciously\u00a0signaling distress,\u00a0but because co\u2011regulation is automatic\u00a0and\u00a0largely\u00a0unconscious. We pick up physiological signals the way we pick up accents.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is why leadership development matters so much for\u00a0organisational\u00a0resilience \u2014 and why it needs to go\u00a0beyond\u00a0way\u00a0technical competence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Connected leaders function as a regulatory resource for their teams.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amy Edmondson\u2019s research on psychological safety offers a parallel: teams that feel safe perform better across innovation, error detection, and decision\u2011making. Safety signals to the nervous system that the environment is not a threat. Each person has a window within which they can\u00a0function:\u00a0activated enough to be engaged, settled enough to think clearly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Resilience\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0about avoiding the edges.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0about widening the window over time \u2014 and building recovery\u00a0pathways\u00a0so the return to\u00a0centre\u00a0happens faster.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the individual level, somatic practices support this.
